In 1687 Greece was a part of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice was at war the empire when they laid siege to and eventually sacked the city. The Venetians looted Athens of it’s wealth, carting of many treasures and historical antiquities including the Piraeus lion. The Venetians noticed that there was a strange writing along the shoulder and flank of the lion, however no one remembered what the language was, what it said, or who put it there. The lion was carted off to Venice and put on display at the Venetian Arsenal, where it sits to this day.

The origins of the writing remained a mystery until the lion was visited by a Swedish diplomat named Johann David Akerblad, who identified them as Nordic runes at the end of the 18th century. Since then numerous scholars have viewed and attempted to translate the runes. This task is greatly complicated by the fact that the runes are heavily eroded, with many completely illegible. The most widely accepted translation is from Erik Brate in 1914,

The runes are believed to have been carved in the 11th century by the Varangians. The Varangians were a group of Scandinavian Vikings who sold their services as mercenaries to the Eastern Roman Empire, AKA the Byzantine Empire. The Varangians would eventually settle down in what is now Russia and Ukraine.

comments

Indeed, it is not a name at all, but a description—“old lady yaga” or perhaps “scary old woman.” ere is often more than one Baba Yaga in a story, and thus we should really say “a Baba Yaga,” “the Baba Yaga.” We do so in these tales when a story would otherwise be confusing. We have continued the western tradition of capitalizing Baba Yaga, since the words cannot be translated and have no other meaning in English (aside perhaps from the pleasant associations of a rum baba). ere is no graceful way to put the name in the plural in English, and in Russian tales multiple iterations of Baba Yaga never appear at the same time, only in sequence: Baba Yaga sisters or cousins talk about one another, or send travelers along to one another, but they do not live together. e first-person pronoun “I” in Russian, ‘ia,’ is also uncapitalized. In some tales our witch is called only “Yaga.” A few tales refer to her as “Yagishna,” a patronymic form suggesting that she is Yaga’s daughter rather than Yaga herself. (That in turn suggests that Baba Yaga reproduces parthenogenetically, and some scholars agree that she does.) The lack of capitalization in every published Russian folktale also hints at Baba Yaga’s status as a type rather than an individual, a paradigmatic mean or frightening old woman. This description in place of a name, too, could suggest that it was once a euphemism for another name or term, too holy or frightening to be spoken, and therefore now long forgotten.”

— Sibelan Forrester, from her introduction to Baba Yaga: The Wild Witch of the East in Russian Fairy Tales

comments

The new study published in PLOS One by researchers at Oregon State College finds that grasses and plants flourish in the shade underneath solar panels because of a significant change in moisture. The results bolster the argument for agrovoltaics, the concept of using the same area of land for solar arrays and farming. The idea is to grow food and produce clean energy at the same time.

Oh! I actually heard about this!! At the Sheep & Wool Festival there was a woman shearing a sheep, so we took Farmkid over to watch, and the woman started telling us that this was a new breed of sheep they were trying to get to catch on in the region, and they were pretty decent for wool but the big thing that they were useful for was grazing under solar installations, because they were small but not super into jumping. Some sheep are too large to fit under the panels, and some are too vertically-inclined and like to climb on them, which can damage them, so these particular sheep were in the sweet spot of being smallish but not great jumpers.

Apparently that’s where the money is. Because otherwise you have to mow the grass under the panels, and ride-on lawn mowers don’t fit. (If you don’t keep the foliage down, it can take over the field and shade your solar panels.)

Shepherds can make most of their profit by hiring their flock out to keep a solar installation grazed down, and it’s extra-great because solar installations tend to have good forage under them.

(what does it say about the state of america’s foodways that you otherwise often can’t make money on raising livestock except in horrifying confinement operations, however? the woman was absolutely clear that the sheep didn’t break even on wool or meat, but if you could get solar gigs you were golden. Isn’t that sad?)

comments

via https://ift.tt/2EkbKdj

imakegoodlifechoices:

the-hopeful-lark:

tinybro:

so we have a conversational safeword in my group of friends and it’s great, idk why more people don’t do this. whenever someone wants a subject to be dropped immediately no questions asked we just say “spleen” and we stop immediately and it’s a really good way to avoid crossing the line between teasing friends and genuinely upsetting them by accident, or stopping debates from turning into actual arguments

Wait but no this is actually a brilliant idea.

When I was a little baby high school student, I used to do the Living Chessboard at our local Renaissance Faire. We always used “forsooth” to indicate if someone was actually injured and needed to quickly end a choreographed fight. It was also very useful when doing little street improvisations because if someone tried to stop you, you could say “forsooth good sir, I must leave.” and they knew you couldn’t do a scene right then. We all used it in real life too, to say “no really” and it was amazing because there was a word used in a casual setting that meant “I’m not playing, I need you do listen to me.” So if someone tried to pick me up or tickle me, I could say “forsooth stop.” And I was instantly obeyed. I had “forsooth” long before I learned what a safeword was, and having a non-sexual safeword for everyday use amongst a circle of friends was the best thing ever. It made me feel very safe and listened to, even as a tiny 14 year old. Because let’s be honest, 14 year old me was teeny tiny and adorable and it’s easy to coo at kids when they say “no don’t pick me up!” but to have a word that every single person respected to mean “whatever I say after this MUST be listened to” was amazing. It gave me a definitive voice when it would have been easy to dismiss me.

So basically having platonic safewords is awesome and I’m all for it.

comments
