Tumblr is a garbage corporation, but also they’re not trying to make it seem like they’re the poor downtrodden either. They also don’t prevent me from hosting things on their site while trying to get compensated for my time. Also, no one is coming at me on anon on tumblr trying to claim tumblr just desperately needs to do those things to survive. No is coming at me making excuses for tumblr. I came in in 1987. The Internet was not yet a thing for the female fans (another thing about this is that it actually ignores the experiences of half of the fan population, but since they ignored us to the point of believing we didn’t exist for at least 30 years, I think that’s fair.)

comments

via https://ift.tt/2ZEYesB

penwiper:

So a couple days ago, some folks braved my long-dormant social media accounts to make sure I’d seen this tweet:

And after getting over my initial (rather emotional) response, I wanted to reply properly, and explain just why that hit me so hard.

So back around twenty years ago, the internet cosplay and costuming scene was very different from today. The older generation of sci-fi convention costumers was made up of experienced, dedicated individuals who had been honing their craft for years. These were people who took masquerade competitions seriously, and earning your journeyman or master costuming badge was an important thing. They had a lot of knowledge, but – here’s the important bit – a lot of them didn’t share it. It’s not just that they weren’t internet-savvy enough to share it, or didn’t have the time to write up tutorials – no, literally if you asked how they did something or what material they used, they would refuse to tell you. Some of them came from professional backgrounds where this knowledge literally was a trade secret, others just wanted to decrease the chances of their rivals in competitions, but for whatever reason it was like getting a door slammed in your face. Now, that’s a generalization – there were definitely some lovely and kind and helpful old-school costumers – but they tended to advise more one-on-one, and the idea of just putting detailed knowledge out there for random strangers to use wasn’t much of a thing. And then what information did get out there was coming from people with the freedom and budget to do things like invest in all the tools and materials to create authentic leather hauberks, or build a vac-form setup to make stormtrooper armor, etc. NOT beginner friendly, is what I’m saying.

Then, around 2000 or so, two particular things happened: anime and manga began to be widely accessible in resulting in a boom in anime conventions and cosplay culture, and a new wave of costume-filled franchises (notably the Star Wars prequels and the Lord of the Rings movies) hit the theatres. What those brought into the convention and costuming arena was a new wave of enthusiastic fans who wanted to make costumes, and though a lot of the anime fans were much younger, some of them, and a lot of the movie franchise fans, were in their 20s and 30s, young enough to use the internet to its (then) full potential, old enough to have autonomy and a little money, and above all, overwhelmingly female. I think that latter is particularly important because that meant they had a lifetime of dealing with gatekeepers under our belts, and we weren’t inclined to deal with yet another one. They looked at the old dragons carefully hoarding their knowledge, keeping out anyone who might be unworthy, or (even worse) competition, and they said NO. If secrets were going to be kept, they were going to figure things out for ourselves, and then they were going to share it with everyone. Those old-school costumers may have done us a favor in the long run, because not knowing those old secrets meant that we had to find new methods, and we were trying – and succeeding with – materials that “serious” costumers would never have considered. I was one of those costumers, but there were many more – I was more on the movie side of things, so JediElfQueen and PadawansGuide immediately spring to mind, but there were so many others, on YahooGroups and Livejournal and our own hand-coded webpages, analyzing and testing and experimenting and swapping ideas and sharing, sharing, sharing.

I’m not saying that to make it sound like we were the noble knights of cosplay, riding in heroically with tutorials for all. I’m saying that a group of people, individually and as a collective, made the conscious decision that sharing was a Good Things that would improve the community as a whole. That wasn’t necessarily an easy decision to make, either. I know I thought long and hard before I posted that tutorial; the reaction I had gotten when I wore that armor to a con told me that I had hit on something new, something that gave me an edge, and if I didn’t share that info I could probably hang on to that edge for a year, or two, or three. And I thought about it, and I was briefly tempted, but again, there were all of these others around me sharing what they knew, and I had seen for myself what I could do when I borrowed and adapted some of their ideas, and I felt the power of what could happen when a group of people came together and gave their creativity to the world.

And it changed the face of costuming. People who had been intimidated by the sci-fi competition circuit suddenly found the confidence to try it themselves, and brought in their own ideas and discoveries. And then the next wave of younger costumers took those ideas and ran, and built on them, and branched out off of them, and the wave after that had their own innovations, and suddenly here we are, with Youtube videos and Tumblr tutorials and Etsy patterns and step-by-step how-to books, and I am just so, so proud.

So yeah, seeing appreciation for a 17-year-old technique I figured out on my dining-room table (and bless it, doesn’t that page just scream “I learned how to code on Geocities!”), and having it embraced as a springboard for newer and better things warms this fandom-old’s heart. This is our legacy, and a legacy the current group of cosplayers is still creating, and it’s a good one.

(Oh, and for anyone wondering: yes, I’m over 40 now, and yes, I’m still making costumes. And that armor is still in great shape after 17 years in a hot attic!)

comments

Novels are dangerous and cause insanity, until they become classics worthy of being studied in college. Beatlemania is the province of “the dull, the idle, the failures,“ until the Beatles become a band that everyone loves.

Young women are so attacked for loving the media they love that it is a radical act for a young woman to love something unashamedly. And transformative fandom is the most radical act of all, because it reverses that “lady thing to respectable thing” process.

Emphasis added. It’s so good- go read the whole thing.

“That’s why as a culture we’ve decided that transformative fandom is weird and gross and morally wrong, and that’s why all the articles in the world explaining that transformative fandom is a totally legitimate way to interact with a text aren’t really making a dent in the never-ending stream of repulsed investigations of fandom. Because fandom is the province of young women and, culturally, we find young women terrifying.”

This is a good article.

This is a pretty common phenomenon

Something, some trend or commodity or form of media, is derided by society because it’s not manly, or it’s not white, or it’s not straight

The people who like it are made fun of for liking it. Especially if they’re from the group it’s made for and/or by. In fact, that whole group will be made fun of for liking the thing made for them, as if it wasn’t obvious what the bigots are really mocking them for

Then the thing becomes cool and popular, and society tries its hardest to distance the thing from the groups that created it. Look at science fiction as an example

Then those groups take it back, through fanfiction or through representation in the media, and what happens? You get a bunch of whiny white boys screaming about how “diversity is ruining our thing that we definitely started! SJWs are delusional! MAGA!”

Bigots will always mock something associated with whoever they’re bigoted against… until it becomes popular, at which point they’ll pretend it was theirs all along and attack anyone who says otherwise

Is there a name for this process? Because it happens often enough that there should be a name for it. More specific than just “being an asshole” I mean

comments

But if you act like people who write or portray Lucretia as NOT a lesbian are lesbophobic, homophobic, and are somehow “taking away representation” by not also headcanoning her as a lesbian, then you’re an asshole.

No I’m not still bitter about a bunch of assholes in one fandom what are you talking about?

problematic-fiction-101:

Some daily fandom reminders:

Word of God is not canon. If you’re in the Harry Potter fandom, then you are intimately familiar with this concept.

Fanon is never going to affect or take away from canon. One person’s headcanons or ships won’t change what’s actually in canon. Someone shipping non-canon ships is not “taking away your representation” because your actual representation is still in canon and probably very present in the rest of the fandom.

The author is dead. This is a true statement for every fandom. The creator of a work may be able to speak with the Word of God but, to continue that metaphor, they are not a god you have to listen to or follow.

Fandom is meant to be a creative playground. Limiting ourselves to “acceptable” and canon ships and “acceptable” tropes and all that doesn’t do anything except limit the potential our fandoms have. It’s fun to explore different relationship dynamics, it’s fun to explore alternate universes, it’s fun to explore different tones and genres, and a fandom that does those things stays fun and interesting for the people in it.

There are bigots in fandom. There are racists, homophobes, transphobes, queerphobes, ableists, xenophobes, antisemites, islamophobes, and every other kind of bigot in fandom. This doesn’t mean that fandom is bad, just that it falls victim to the exact same issues that literally every community in the world does.

There is no age requirement and no age restriction. There are 80 year olds reading fanfiction written by 12 year olds. There are 18 year olds reblogging fanart drawn by 60 year olds. There are meta discussions spanning generations. Adult spaces should remain for adults and kid spaces should remain for adults, but intergenerational friendships are not inherently weird or creepy.

On that same topic, adults in fandom are not responsible for the overall safety of kids in fandom. It’s our responsibility to tag properly, warn for nsfw content, interact with children appropriately, drive out known predators from our spaces, and similar things. It is not our responsibility to parent anyone except our own kids.

Fandom is not activism. It can be used for that, and often is, but nothing about it is inherently political. A person’s fandoms, ships, favorite characters, etc tells you nothing about their political beliefs. Fandom is not about how “progressive” we can be with our headcanons, it’s about having fun.

Feel free to add more.

comments

Fanfiction shows us all the things that should have happened, if the world was a little bit kinder: someone adopts Harry Potter, the Avengers live domestically together, people fall in love and admit it. Fanfiction says, things are awful but we’re kind anyway, because we can be, because kindness costs little and gives much. It is democracy at its best, a collection of people solving problems together, solving plotholes and heartbreaks and deaths, a conversation of solution responding to solution because the whole of fandom is, itself, its own canon.

But at the same time, fanfiction is about all of those holes and jagged edges and wounds left unhealed, about what happens when the war is over and everyone who’s left needs to go back home. It’s about the fact that surviving is usually the hardest part, and we rarely get to choose what’s done to us but we do get to choose how we survive afterwards. It’s about the child soldiers who no longer have a war, and about the trauma of getting past the trauma you’ve survived. It’s about injury and depression and PTSD. It’s about recovery, yes, but also about those things that do not recover, those things that will never recover. It is a reminder that we live in a world where many people don’t get white picket fences and 2.5 kids and a happily ever after, but also a reminder that there is life beyond that, survival, yes, but also life. It is a reminder that characters’ lives don’t end with the last page and nor too do people’s lives end with their trauma, but that after that hurt comes comfort and healing and putting one foot in front of another because the best way to get through hell is to keep going.

comments

via https://ift.tt/2KNqOlk

I know multiple fics with the same trope is common in fandom, but I still feel kinda demotivated by it, because I felt like it was so unique, which makes me feel guilty. I do love the idea and the fic I wrote, but now I’m not sure if it’s worth posting because I feel like I’ll just be comparing myself to them, which would just end badly bc they’re more popular and have been writing fic longer, so it’s natural more ppl would read theirs. Can you or the blog give some advice?

-

I met one of my fandom besties because I accidentally started writing a fic with the same premise that she was writing - but she couldn’t post hers because it was for an exchange. So there I was, posting my fic while she was watching and freaking out because we were even using very similar plot devices. She commented on the first couple of chapters and we started chatting a bit, but then she noped out of the fic because she was worried about them being too much the same.

She and I still ended up talking, though, and a friendship was born. We ended up with similar numbers on our fics and lots of people read them both. No one accused either of us of plagiarism and as far as I know, there wasn’t any drama about it in the fandom either.

In that situation, she’d been writing in the fandom for close to a year and it was my first ever fic for the show. That didn’t seem to hinder my readership and it certainly didn’t lower hers.

I think you’ll be fine, anon. If you love the idea, write the idea. The rest will come :)

comments

But I submit that he LOVES grad students.

- if asked (by Crowley, solely to fluster his Angel) he will say that it’s completely reasonable to love people who want to study and discuss books? And that feeling he gets when they come and ask him for help isn’t Pride no. It just so happens that having lived for millennia means he’s the best primary source on the planet. It would be selfish to not share his knowledge really. Why shouldnt he feel good about helping young people learn? So it’s really only lowercase ‘pride’ at most…

- …I mean, it’s just harmless satisfaction that he is spreading knowledge like God intended. Err, probably intended. This knowledge isnt that Forbidden Knowledge so it’s fine, right? They’re way past that at this point. Surely there is no objection to knowing about books?

- if you were to ask Crowley, he will point out that grad students can’t afford to actually buy any books. But no one has ever asked him

- back when the shop first opened, poor Aziraphale was struggling with the realization that people might get suspicious if never lets anyone buy any of his books. And in walks in some poor, exhausted student from Kings or London University who has spent the last 10hrs looking in every bookstore and library around for an original copy of ‘The Tamer Tamed’. So they stumble in, turn to Aziraphale and ask if he has any 17th century editions of Fletcher’s work. They just need to look at it bc every copy they’ve found has been edited.

- does Aziraphale have a 17th century editions of Flecher’s ‘The Woman’s Prize, or The Tamer Tamed’? What an absurd question! He has the first edition, printed in 1647. Two copies in fact, one with notes in the margins written by an early actor that Aziraphale particularly liked. It was, after all, one of Crowley’s favorite plays from that period.

- (Crowley claims that he has nothing to do with the plays popularity when compared to the work it was in response to, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’. Yes, he preferred the feminist-leaning work by Fletcher, but it’s not his fault the audience agreed with him) [1]

- the look on this students face when Aziraphale sits them down at his desk and brings over this folio - full of relief and gratitude - have the angel feeling a bit chuffed. So much so that, as he’s closing the shop for the day, he tells them to come back tomorrow if they need another look. And thus one of the great student pilgrimages of London is born

- at the beginning of each term, new students make their way to this strange, magical bookstore run by a nice, possibly-immortal man. Group visits are discouraged, as they seem to make the owner nervous.

- fellow students (and sometimes professors) warn newcomers that the owner doesn’t actually want people to buy any books. But if go and tell him that you just want to look at them for a class, he will let you come and look around.

- actually, browsing isn’t recommended: depending on his mood, Mr. Fell (the owner) may encourage you to look around or he may decide to suddenly close early, or find some way to get you out the door. It’s always safest to ask Mr. Fell for something specific, the more obscure the better: he likes it when he has the exact thing you’re looking for

- there are snakes in the shelves - well, one snake, probably. Just like Mr. Fell, this snake has been hiding in the shelves since the store opened and never ages. It loves to jump out and scare customer, but is generally considered harmless unless you damage or mistreat the books. There are numerous accounts of people being bitten for dog-earing pages, putting cups on books, and general rudeness.

note: do not refer to the snake as Mr. Fell’s pet. He tends to get rather indignant if you do (Mr. Fell, not the snake. If anything, you would think the snake finds Mr. Fell’s reaction amusing) Think of it as his slightly terrifying roommate who occasionally hides in the shelves or curls up by/on Mr. Fell to nap

- A. Z Fell & Co had the world’s least comprehensible business hours. He could be closed for days or weeks at a time, then open 24hrs for a month without explanation. Often, he would open at 4 or 5AM then close around lunch, then open again after he finished lunch (anywhere between 1 and 4PM). There was one 11 year span when the shop was almost always closed - university’s saw a drop in grades in several departments until it finally opened again. If he recognizes you, sometimes you will arrive to find the store closed, only for him to suddenly open the door and let you in because he was “just about to open up”.

- Mr. Fell can easily be bribed when someone needs to stay after closing or come in early the next day. Down the block and across the street is a bakery: it has had many names over the years, but it has been supplying students with bribes in the form of cream puffs, eclairs, Turkish delights, and other sweet treats since the bookstore opened. Students scrambling before a deadline got 10 cents off their purchase.

- while he never seems to know what day it is, or what year it is (see: immortal), he always remembers when it’s time for exams because suddenly the shop is open at all hours, and Mr. Fell “just so happens” to have trays of sandwiches and fruit leftover, and wouldn’t they help him finish it? It’ll spoil, after all. Outside food and drinks are never allowed but suddenly there are little plates and napkins on a table by the door, and stacks of strange coasters from all over the world. Coffee is not allowed but tea is. Of course, everyone knows that Mr. Fell makes the BEST hot cocoa and if you put a coaster next to you, he will bring you a mug of cocoa, always at the perfect temperature.

- as revisions comes to a close, you will find almost a dozen students at Fell & Co. They will be slumped at a desk or curled up on the floor by the windows, cups of cooling cocoa and plates of healthy snacks left in places where they couldn’t spill onto the books. Colorful blankets come out of a back room as Mr. Fell tidies up, smiling fondly as he drapes them over the slumbering students

- there are stories of people whose old, cruddy laptops seem to work better in the bookshop. People listening to music (quietly, of course) may notice that the songs that come up on shuffle are always exactly what they wanted to hear. Notes you could have sworn you left at home or lost show up at the bottom of your bookbag. Documents you should have lost when your computer crashed can be recovered. One Martin Pryce insists that in 2014, he brought his broken bike to the store and when he came out again, it was fixed. He actually went up to Mr. Fell as he closed shop and asked him about it but Mr. Fell insisted he had nothing to do with it. Martin says Mr. Fell sounded like he was telling the truth, but looked very pleased and muttered something about it being a “minor miracle”, which is a bit much for a bike.

- if there are a thousand stories about Mr. Fell and his bookshop, there are just as many about the man in the fancy black car who comes around sometimes. Many have speculated on the nature of the men’s relationship, ranging from torrid love affairs to blackmail to Dickensian-level family drama. But the only thing you really need to know is that when you see that fancy black car parked by the shop, you best just to home. The store is most definitely closed.

1. One account survives of the audiences reactions to the two plays. ‘Shrew’ was performed first and was “liked”. ‘Tamed Tamed’ was performed after and it was “very well liked”. Whether or not this account is from Crawley is impossible to say.

WHY in the WORLD would you hide these absolute GEMS in the TAGS?!????

Btw I ADORE YOU

deadcatwithaflamethrower

Btw I ADORE YOU

deadcatwithaflamethrower

comments

And, it was PJ, Carol, Donna and I, and thought, well they are so wonderfully entertaining to us, we have to do something back for them. But, y'know, we’re really not singers, we’re really not dancers, what can we do? So we sat around with a bottle of wine cooler. And, I don’t drink, and I said, well, how about if we distill down the basis of the cock of the, ahum, Kirk and Spock— (laughter)

KF, MS: —Freudian slip, Freudian slip! (laughter)

KF: Yes, ah, down to their basics, and how ‘bout if we do a cock show? And—

MS: I have that on tape, too.

KF: I have it too. Luckily Dixie Owen would come with her video machine, and I ended up putting together a video from the two years. But the first year we ended up going there, and we had a huge seven-foot, and a six-foot cock. Kirk of course was a little shorter and thicker, Spock was taller and thinner—

MS: Was very green—

KF: —very green with two, with a double ridge on the top. What we did basically is, we took this foam that was used in couch cushions, very dense foam, and we’d sculpt it with an electric knife—

MS: Electric knife— (laughter and coughing)

KF: —so that we had the proper shapes. Carol, who—a little insider—ended up working doing the— In the beginning, for the Barney TV show? She actually did the animals and things and the costumes for Barney. Anyhow, she was our designer who—

MS: (laughter) Sorry.

KF: —made the fabric that came down from the head all the way down— And then for the balls, we’re thinking, “Well what are we going to use?” And I said, “Well, listen, we gotta carry ‘em on the plane. How about if we use beach balls covered in fabric, ‘cause then we can deflate them.”

MS: Yes.

KF: And then of course we had pipe cleaners for the hair and furry bits.

MS: I remember when you brought them. Oh my god.

KF: And we figure, so we— And I put together a list of songs, and we had little snippets of songs. We started out on the stage with Spock all kind of bent over and just kinda hunched. And he had the little song, y'know, “I am a rock, I am an island.” And of course you hear from off-stage the signs of “Macho Man.”

All: (laughter) (indistinguishable shouts)

KF: —Pick one—

MS: “Macho, macho man"—

KF: —and on the stage Spock goes “Huuunh?” and immediately his two balls come out— (squeals) —yeah, from underneath—

MS: —from underneath, boing!

KF: —and his head starts coming up a little bit, and coming up a little bit, and then the Matt Davis song, “I want you to want me, I want you to need me.”

MS: The entire auditorium was in hysterical—

KF: And then of course the finale is the 1812 Overture climax with the cannons going off!

MS: Complete with, was it—

KF: It was, it was—

MS: —did you use confetti that time?

KF: No, it was white candies wrapped in plas— in cellophane which I then threw up by the handfuls for—

MS: Yeah. Woooo! Multiple overlapping voices: —for the climax.

KF: For the climax, yeah. And, the audience was hysterical.

“Kirk of course was a little shorter and thicker, Spock was taller and thinner-“

I have read this description in a fic on AO3 THIS WEEK. Do u really think theyre supposed to drop all their interests and just talk about taxes and marriage or whatever? It seems like 25+ year old fanboys do not receive this kind of “ooh cringe” reaction either. There are guys in their 40s with comic book collections and shit and people might think theyre a nerd at worst, not a freak who shouldnt be trusted

Thank you. Because, here’s the thing, I literally tried that. And this sounds really dramatic but it kind of ruined my life for a long time.

Once I got out of grad-school and started working, at exactly age 25, I figured it was time to get serious because I was “too old for this stuff” and frankly I was afraid of being judged.

I sold all my comics, I stopped reading fanfiction, I stopped playing video games. All of it. It’s not that I never, ever watched anything “geeky” or spent a weekend binge-reading a kink-meme, but when I did, it was rare and I’d feel guilty about it like it was time wasted. I’d keep it all to myself, you know? And without any kind of inspiration, I eventually stopped drawing. After all, I didn’t need it for my “serious job,” so why bother? Unfortunately, my former skill is so atrophied now it’s nearly lost, but worse than that, it’s stressful now instead of the thing I loved to do for most of my life.

What was I doing instead? Well, I’d work my miserable, toxic job, come home and worry about how far behind everyone else I was, and how weird I was compared to all my colleagues. I’d go out with people and do the things they liked doing, but I only pretended to. But I’m not great at that and pretending to be someone else ate me alive. Unsurprisingly, by 31, my anxiety and depression was not in a great place, and I fuckin’ snapped. Not just because of this stuff, of course, but it honestly contributed. I quit my job and left town.

Suddenly I was completely alone, no job, no friends, and no reason to pretend to be someone else. So, I started doing all the things I’d given up. I read all the fanfiction I wanted, I bought a Playstation and an SNES and played them for hours. I bought back every comic book I loved, watched every Marvel movie I missed, and caught up on my favorite characters. I started traveling around just going to cons for the first time (NYCC, GeekGirlCon, DragonCon, etc). In fact, at geekgirlcon and DragonCon especially, I saw groups of women who were 60+, just fucking enjoying things, and it made me feel so much better about my future. I’m not even joking, I literally cry every time I think about it, because I never realized how scared I was about aging in a world that thinks I’m already a decade too old for the things I love. Suddenly, that wasn’t so scary.

And then I just stopped pretending that I wasn’t into this stuff. I mean all of it, even the stuff no one understand, even the stuff people openly make fun of, even smutty fanfiction.

And look, I’m not saying this cured my depression, or that everything is perfect. For one, I picked a city that’s awful for geeks and I’m trying to figure out where to move and how. For another, I lost six years of making like-minded friends, and it’s hard to find them now because we’re all so worried about being judged and online – the space that was always a refuge for me as a loner weirdo growing up – is now apparently a Children of the Corn. But I’m happier here, actually fucking liking things, than being the unobjectionable robot woman I’m apparently supposed to be.

I don’t expect anyone to actually be interested in this, or have gotten this far, but because I’m having feelings about turning 36 on Monday, I just want to tell anyone who is about to turn 25 that you should just tell people to go fuck themselves. It’s your life. You’re going to offend people no matter what you do, at least choose the direction that makes you happiest, because those people certainly aren’t going to pay for your fucking therapist bills, are they? 🦖

This is gonna sound weird to you guys, but when I first started writing fanfic and sending stories to fanzines to be published back in 1991, in my first fandom all of the fans and writers and editors and readers I met were shocked that I was 17 because they were all in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. I was the outlier. I was an aberration.

Wanna know when young people started discovering fandom en masse? In the mid 1990s, when AOL got their internet gateway.

All the folks who ran fannish mailing lists and conventions and published ‘zines and posted fanfic online were over 18, because email and IRC and Usenet and FTP sites and listservs were primarily used by adults because they were almost exclusively college students, government employees, and academics. And the users of gated communities like BBS, GEnie, Compuserv, and AOL all skewed older. Only Prodigy was actually aimed at kids, because prior to the mid-to-late 1990s, children weren’t getting online until they went to university.

And what kids found was the fandom that adults had built online, after being a part of it offline for decades.

Even when FFN was launched, the people who initially posted there were the same people who had been posting fanfic to the internet for a decade: THE GROWN-UPS.

So the idea that we’re meant to put away childish things is hilarious, cos for most of our lives, fandom was not a part of our childhoods. It was a part of our everyday adult lives.

Look, anyone who tells me I should drop fandom because I’m over 25 is going to get laughed out of the room, because you know what age I was when I first discovered organised fandom existed?

I was 26.

I started writing fanfic (or at least, I started writing stories that I labelled as fanfic, rather than just “stories”) at about age 30. I’m in my late forties now, and I have no interest in dropping fandom. I especially have no interest in dropping fandom because some brat who wasn’t even born when I started putting my fanfic online wants to try and sell me their internalised misogyny.

I was twenty-three when I found fandom; in all the important ways, it decided the course of my life.

I didn’t even know I liked tech; for my first fic, I needed a webpage, it was ugly, so I opened it to look at the code, saw my first html, and fell in love. Now I’m an analyst who tests programs for statewide and even national use.

I didn’t know I liked people; I thought something was wrong with me, that I seemed to always say the wrong thing, that I seemed to think wrong. Instead, it just turns out how I think is just fine; there are so many people like me and I still meet them to this day.

I didn’t know I could make and maintain friendships, short or long term; as it turns out, not a huge problem. I make and maintain friendships of almost two decades and still made new friends as of this year.

When my son came out to me as gay, I was ready for the question he wouldn’t ask that I had to answer right then; I love you. Of course it’s okay. And why the fuck are you awake and messaging me at three in the goddamn morning? YOU HAVE SCHOOL TOMORROW. Without all the friends who told me what they needed that day for themselves, I’m not sure I would have known that was something he needed to hear. Without my friends, I wouldn’t have known to even expect–much less how to answer–a thousand questions (at least) he had, and where to have him look for more.

(Also didn’t hurt fandom was the one place I could be sure was all the happy ending gay love stories any gay child would need to read and knew exactly where to send him. Fuck knows the pro version still isn’t exactly thick on the ground though it’s getting better.)

When I first started, I was mentored by an older woman in her forties-fifties, and on her webpage she had a log of all this shit she’d done just in the last year; traveled to hang out with fan friends, all the fic she wrote that year, all these people she met, this wonderful life. She posted to all these sites, and she posted to mailing lists her opinion and argued without fear or self-consciousness.

All I could think is I want to be her.

At twenty-three, I couldn’t imagine it would be possible for me. I’m forty three, and as it turns out, I underestimated myself; it’s even better.

Something you activist kiddies should keep in mind with all the “lol a thirty-year-old in fandom doesn’t she have dishes to do” nonsense is that it’s not only generally misogynist (not sure why you struggle with that one, it’s 101-level, but okay), but it is specifically designed to thwart women’s power by separating you from potential networks.

You think men just somehow magically get powerful as they pass into adulthood? No. They are mentored by, they get given chances to move up from, they learn from older men in their social networks, including in predominantly male “fannish” space. Power, knowledge, opportunities move through those networks–and don’t kid yourself, they are primarily masculine networks. By narrowing your networks to women within one or two years of your age, the “lol thirty-year-olds” rhetoric cuts you off from resources you might use to get stronger. That’s a feature, not a bug.

Just the other day, I was in a room full of older fans that included a Nebula-winning author, an agent for a (different) Hugo-winning author, two tenured professors in radically different fields, and a member of the Foreign Service. You’ll make your own friends in fandom (I did; one of my closest is 15 years older than me, and, my, did I learn from her), but these are the kind of resources available to you there. Misogyny wants you to despise and avoid older women because it wants you weak. Is this really something you want to play along with?

#reblogging for harriet_spy’s excellent commentary#its NOT AN ACCIDENT#that we disown our mothers and foremothers#it’s how they keep us weak#its how they destroy our networks#fandom is the best old girls network in the world

And, by the way, thinking that a woman over 30 is “too old” to have fun is a misogynistic notion in itself. Our culture already fetishizes female youth to the extreme and does a very good job to convince us that our life is basically over by the time we are 29, why would you want to contribuite to that? It isn’t just that you’re never too old for fandom, it’s that most of the time all these “old women” aren’t old at all.

I am here for the old girls’ network

The old girls’ network saved Star Trek.

The old girls’ network started the first media conventions.

The old girls’ network redefined fanfiction to be stories about characters (as opposed to stories about fans themselves, which was what Fan Fiction was prior to Devra Langsam and Spockanalia.)

The old girls’ network was fandom before FANDOM was a word.

I’m 31, and I’m too powerful for any of these kids to stop.

Y'all these are like 15-17 year olds ur dunking on u realize that right? For one, if a literal child is uncomfortable with a 31 year old in their space that is 100% valid. And for another, they ARE kids. They don’t have this life experience you have. They WILL learn. But you can’t expect them to not know everything that you know now at 31. They will learn when they get to where you are, but they are just kids.

You are the adult. Act like one. Educate, don’t be an asshole to literal kids.

That’s the thing, though.

This isn’t their space. This is our space. WE BUILT IT. A lot of young 15 and 17 year olds like to come into our space that we built for our own selves, and then said “Hey we don’t like you here.” IN OUR HOUSE.

See, if I post smut, I’m posting it for me and other adults. If a kid wanders in, when I have clearly marked it as for adults, that’s on them for not heeding content warnings.

“Educate them” okay, here’s a thread discussing the history of fandom as a space created predominantly by and for women over twenty five. Very educational thread, this.

Someone bring back the video of the women who made people size dancing Spirk dicks for a con in like the 80s

The Premise gave us modern fandom and don’t you fucking forget it.

comments

His granddad had dinner with our family once and now his family’s just like weird cousins. Always wears black; he’s either orthodox or his whole family’s been very goth for, like, ever” –one of the family’s kids at torah study

See, this is Excellent, but I also like “Yeah, that’s Uncle Crowley. He was at my grandfather’s father’s Bar Mitzvah. We’re pretty sure he’s immortal, but we’re deliberately Not Asking about it and it’s been driving him crazy since 1903.”

he’s got a whole backstory cooked up but *no one’s asking about it*

also i just had an image of Crowley at a seder and they’re at least three cups of wine in and they get to Had Gadyo and crowley who is definitely on his way to sloshed is just

“HEY I REMEMBER ZUZIM.”

“ok uncle crowley”

“why would someone sell a goat for two zuzim that’s not even enough for a cup of coffee”

“of course it isn’t uncle crowley”

this is very good.

Of course the family has questions. It’s been one of the most popular family arguments for generations, (and a couple of family members have got it right) but only when Crowley isn’t there. As soon as he’s there it would be rude and unwelcoming to bring the subject up, and whatever Crowley is he’s plainly in need of family. Besides, they might get answers and then the argument would be over.

Secondary favorite argument is what his friend Aziraphale is, when he brings the angel to dinner once or twice.

they get to the angel of death in chad gadya and crowley frowns and is like “nasty bugger. dont want to mess with him”

they invite eliyahu in and crowley’s like “oh sup dude” and starts a “””one sided””” conversation (the older kids think it’s for laughs and the younger kids are Convinced he’s really talking to a ghost)

“Uncle Crowley is immortal because he scared off the angel of death once three thousand years ago” is a legitimate side of the argument held by at least two people

comments

via https://ift.tt/2HctvuZ

scotty-the-t-rex:

Okay but think about how, in the alternate 2012 timeline, the Time Heist Squad left behind an entire elevator full of Hydra agents who think Captain America is one of them. Think about how Captain America just had his patriotic butt whooped by a doppelgänger who told him Bucky’s still alive and then complimented his ass. He must be so confused. The Hydra agents must be so confused, but like, they’re Hydra. It’s probably in the Secret Evil Organization Handbook to never, ever talk about who’s in it. It’s like the very first rule of being a successful sci-fi Nazi: If you somehow get a guy called Captain America to join a secret Nazi organization, you do not talk about it. You keep that on the down low so that you have the ultimate double agent on your side. So Captain America is probably wandering around in the Good Ol’ 21st century, confused out of his mind, likely wondering what WiFi is and how he can find Bucky and where he can find Bucky and how could Bucky still be alive and is it America’s ass, really? And then one of the SHIELD agents that he’s met maybe like, twice before walks up to him and before Steve can even give so much as a How Do You Freakin’ Do the motherduffer is whispering Hail Hydra in Steve “I committed multiple felonies for the chance to punch Hitler in the face and I never actually got to do it” Rogers’s ear and shoving a briefcase full of soldier enhancement serum and Pentagon secrets and like, the secret recipe for Coca-Cola or whatever it is that secret Nazi organizations care about into his hand. And Steve. Steve may not know how Twitter works. He may not know emoji etiquette yet. He may not know why bananas are suddenly so weird or why having a lot of people following you is now a good thing. But Steve. Steve knows how to fight him some Nazis. He takes the suitcase. He Hail Hydras back. And then he busts his (America’s) ass back to Avengers Tower like guys you will not believe what is going down I thought we were done with Nazis in the FORTIES. Cue the Avengers trying to take down Hydra super early in the game without anyone knowing it’s the Avengers that are attacking the Hydra bases so that Steve can keep playing the double agent. Cue them trying to figure out who they can trust and who they can’t in SHIELD. And every time—every time—they bring someone else into the fold, they have to explain to them they have an agent who’s infiltrated Hydra, and every time, the person in question thinks it’s Natasha.

And no. It’s Steve.

“How in the hell did you convince them that Captain America is a Nazi?”

And that’s the best part.

Because they have no idea.

comments
