This is worse! This is capitulation to the idea that adults in an adult space are responsible for chasing out all the minors before they can be adults in peace.
If a seventeen year old snuck into a strip club through the bathroom window and took a 21+ wristband out of the trash and then gets upset that there are naked people all around you can’t blame the bartender or the bouncer at the door or the dancers on stage for the fact that the seventeen year old was exposed to adult entertainment.
You can’t fairly call these people pedophiles, they’re not sexually exploiting children, they’re not intentionally showing children sexually explicit material, they are being adults doing their adult thing and a child showed up and pretended to be an adult.
Like, as someone who has suffered pretty significantly because of an actual pedophile I’m very bothered by the fact that the reaction to being accused of pedophilia isn’t “fuck you for attempting to redefine pedophilia like that, you lying, manipulative asshole” and instead it’s “well maybe you won’t think we’re pedophiles if we ask for more personally identifiable data.”
That’s the secret, you’re not fighting with people who will be swayed by reason and logic here. You’re saying “well, we’ll ask for ID so we can be sure we’re safe and minors can’t get in here” and in six months its going to be “well you know all of that can be faked, minors got in, you didn’t try hard enough and it was probably on purpose because you’re pedophiles” and you’ll say “well okay, now we require video confirmation and voice check ins every few days” and in six months they’ll say, “deepfakes are a thing, you know that, you must have wanted children to be able to get in here because you’re pedophiles” and you’ll say “okay, now we require a background check and a live webcam on the user at all times so a mod can make sure we’re all adults” and they’ll say “well you knew your little sister could steal your login and looks very mature for her age, you put these things where you knew children could break in to see them because children always want to see the secret things adults do, so by having an adult only group you’re attracting and grooming children, because you’re pedophiles, better not you have the group at all, better not to write or make or read these things that children shouldn’t see. Put it away, stop making it and sharing it and talking about it, it’s the only way we can be sure you’re not pedophiles.”
Don’t let them redefine terms this way.
Fuck it. You did your due diligence, you asked children not to be here. If they came in anyway that’s not on you.

Understanding the culture that led to this doesn’t mean that it’s appropriate for a mod to ask for identification, nor that I would turn it in. Yikes.

I mean, I understand why people do this. How many callout posts have we seen that screams “so-and-so exposed minors to pornography!!” and then it turns they didn’t quadruple make sure everyone was over 18 for an nsfw chat after the initial check?
many discord servers go by the honour system, and you’re not supposed to click on the 18+ chat if you’re a minor, but thanks to callout posts, apparently it’s the mods who are pedophiles for allowing minors to interact with adults at all, even if the rest of the server is not nsfw.
I’m not surprised discord mods have reacted by asking for ID

If I wanted to make sure everyone was over 18 I’d lock every channel except the “entrance” channel. It would have a pinned comment. The comment would have the basic rules and a statement of majority, then a simple math problem interfacing with the date (day-4/month+5 Or something).
Would a minor be able to write the words? Yes. Would a minor be banned if we found they snuck on? Also yes. But would our asses be covered legally? Very much so.

Newsflash: I’m joining all of these discords with forged documents, getting myself a position as mod, and then I’m selling all of your info on the darkweb because I’ve spent so much fucking time yelling about how to be more secure and why you should want to protect your data and now these REPREHENSIBLE FOOLS are just gonna blithely hand over their wallets and it’s not frequently that I’ll say “they’ll deserve what happens to them” with internet/ID theft stuff but FUCK if you give somebody all the details they need to take out a credit card in your name in order to get onto a fucking NSFW fandom discord server then you fucking deserve what happens to you.

I keep saying that compulsory ID is a form of surveillance, no matter where it is from or with what ‘intentions’ it is levied. Actually calling it and classing it as surveillance though means that it’s really obvious that people who have already prepared to dodge surveillance will not be ‘caught’ or ‘deterred’ by it.

They don’t even have to steal one, they can grab one off Google Images for their state and censor any detail that would indicate it’s fake and then show you that.
