TIL that, including the Chernobyl disaster, Nuclear Power is responsible for 0.09 deaths per Terra-watt hour of electricity produced. Coal is responsible for 170 deaths/TWh
via reddit.com
Honestly, we should all be using nuclear power until we have viable, long term clean/renewable energy.
People bring up Chernobyl, Three Mile and Fukashima as examples but people forget that the two former were at least 30+ years ago, and the latter was built on a fault line and was hit by two natural disasters.
We have better technology now to prevent this sort of stuff and we should probably avoid building these plants in disaster prone areas.
It’s true that nuclear plants are now safer than ever, but there’s still the issue of nuclear waste that we can’t get rid of. We can bury it deep into the ground, but even then it will eventually have horrible effects on future generations.
Okay, let’s talk about radioactive waste. And only radioactive waste. Not any other kind of pollution.
When this waste is produced by a nuclear power plant, it comes out in sturdy, carefully sealed, well-shielded canisters which can be contained safely for thousands of years, until we determine a better way to deal with them.
But a coal burning plant? For the same amount of energy produced, it outputs one hundred times as much radioactive waste. But this happens in the form of a fine powder mixed in with the smoke, which then gets pumped directly into the air we breathe.
Even if you completely ignore everything coming out of those smokestacks which is not actively radioactive, to make nuclear power as bad as coal burning you would need to take all those nice little cans of spent fuel, crack them all open, fucking aerosolize that shit, then snort some of it and dust the rest over the nearest forest. And then multiply it by a hundred somehow.
Nuclear power might not be good, but every other option we have right now is several orders of magnitude worse. And by fighting against nuclear power you’re not replacing it with some magical null state, you’re replacing it with more of the filthy bullshit that has been killing us all for the last couple centuries.
reminder that most of the nuclear power scaremongering is directly paid for by the oil and coal industries
ok, like… comparing two differently bad alternatives of power generation is really not taking us anywhere, and to simply brush off the facts (including their entire fucking context) of chernobyl and fukushima, and the atomic power industry in general, is either terribly naive of terribly disingenious.
Like.. do you even the know the vast area that was hit by effects linked to chernobyl? not the simple explosion but the sheer extent the radioactive dust etc travelled? the visible, traceable effects radiating from fukushima into the fucking sea, where it can spread and travel further? do you know how much more closely populated the countries that use nuclear power are by now? are you perchance aware that even the best “sturdy containers” used to contain radioactive waste corrode very fast, especially in comparison to their content? like, the things here in our German salzgitter tunnels are already leaking and needing to be replaced or whatever. not to mention the fun of russian atomic waste beingt thrown into fjords and then, with the climate change and changing water patterns, increasing their wonderful travel opportunities? like, what the actual fuck? and excuse you, but what kind of fucking coal plant do you have that produces atomic waste? are you high? what the fuck?
btw, no, I do not endorse coal. and also btw, Germany deciding after Fukushima to quit atomic power earlier than planned did not end with a single hour more needed re coal? because, news flash, renewable energy sources work excellent, in fact since then we have increased exporting power?
pretending that renewable energy just isn’t enough, just isn’t reliable, etc, is in fact the kind of horseshite that capitalist big power producers want to feed you. because one of the facts of renewable energy is that done efficiently and smartly it would destroy the shape of the industry, re big producers and everyone buying from them. this is unfortunately a point where we are stuck here, too. But never let anyone tell you you need coal or oil “because it’s the best or only option”. THAT is in fact a pile of shitty lies, indeed paid for by the big coal and oil indstries.
