Hey, literature folks. Have y'all noticed that people are using kennings again? I mean, sea pancake, danger noodle, sea roomba.

How’s that different from describing the sea as the whale-road or gannet’s bath?

THIS IS SO FUCKING AWESOME. I love kennings.

- Kylo Bean on twitter

What’s really cool is that these kennings accomplish nearly the exact opposite of classical kennings. Sea Pancake and Danger Noodle and Sea Roomba function as familiarizers or diminutives—they make the actual thing seem friendlier and more local.

Classic kennings like Whale-Road and Gannet’s Bath function as a way to make the mundane and normal more epic and dramatic and cool…

It’s crazy how the same device, with thousands of years of separation, are used for nearly opposite purposes!

We can’t do anything if Republicans still control the Senate and block everything, and the States could use some help too!

Funny how all these voting machine “glitches” always benefit republicans….

Isn’t this literally a joke in an episode of the Simpsons

Hey! I’m an election worker! If you ever have an issue like this please tell the people who are working at the polls! I don’t know about other states, as ours got new machines two years ago and we have some of the newest polling machines in the country, but I’m sure that your local polling place will do something about a machine like this.

If you don’t trust the machines to allow you to vote for who you want, you ALWAYS have the right to ask for a paper ballot. If they refuse, get that shit on video and blast them on social media. Election offices HATE having people complain about them on social media. Be sure to specifically get them denying you a paper ballot. PAPER BALLOTS ARE NOT INVALID BALLOTS AND WILL BE COUNTED.

Know your rights, be nice to election workers, be sure to register to vote, and actually get out there and vote!

(Also, if you are willing and able, you should sign up to be an election worker. In the US there is a serious problem with most election workers being Republicans. Most election offices try to have a balance between Democrats, Republicans and Independent, but that’s kind of hard when Republicans are the only ones who sign up. It pays pretty well, and its wayyyy less difficult than most retail jobs. You also can learn so much.)

My buddy read an article about octopus intelligence. It was feeding time, and the handler dumped some shrimp into an octopus’ tank. Then he went into another room and sat at his desk.

A while later, a shrimp was tossed onto his desk.

The octopus, upon finding one bad shrimp in the lot, had grabbed it, escaped its tank, crossed the hall, and threw the expired shrimp at its caretaker. Not only does this showcase their problem-solving capabilities, but also that it could have escaped at any time. It just broke out this time to chuck an off shrimp in indignation at its handler. That’s not just intelligence, that’s a human-like reaction. Kinda make you wonder exactly how smart these guys can be…

OH MY GOD

I went to the aquarium once and we had a tour and we walked past the octopus tank and it was duct taped shut so I asked why and the guy was like. “Well, we had a problem before because these fish were disappearing randomly at night and we had no idea why. Turns out the octopus had memorised the night guards rounds and would creep out of its tank, crawl across the floor to the fish tank, have a little snack and be back in its own tank with the lid shut before the guard came back.” they are super smart

I love octopuses so, so much.

I am both delighted and FUCKING TERRIFIED.

Once I went to the aquarium where they had a baby pacific red octopus in a tank. I had gone there to work on a few real life sketches, obviously I wanted to do one of an octopus. So I kinda just kneeled in front of the tank, and started sketching. The octopus didn’t mind, he sat happily. Then, 5 minutes later, he started moving to the front of the tank, where I was. This tiny octopus faces me directly and starts posing. I don’t know how other to explain it but he started curlung his tentacles in this really graceful way then wouldn’t move for a few minutes. Then again, a new pose. That tiny cute motherfucker knew I was drawing him.
