I think it’s valid to criticize academia as a hierarchical institution with a near monopoly on specialized knowledge. It’s not valid to say reading books or using polysyllabic words is bad.
Reminder that someone got mad at me over this post because I said “polysyllabic” instead of “long.”
Opposing secrecy and the gatekeeping of knowledge, the treatment of education as a medium for vocational training, the predatory nature of exorbitant tuition prices and student loans, and its barring out of people who are of low income or from disadvantaged backgrounds is good.
Anti-intellectualism and demonization of expertise is bad.
Anti-intellectualism is the internalization that knowledge shouldn’t belong to us. I refuse to accept that.
