In early June, JK Rowling posted an essay about how persecuted she was for her transphobia, reciting a number of tired and easily refuted transphobic talking points that don’t really need recitation here. It was such an appalling misuse of her platform and such a terrible incitement to stigma and violence against trans people that I decided to take what I considered really a pretty minimal action, and add the following to every Harry Potter fanfic I have posted at AO3:

“I condemn JK Rowling’s recent transphobic, inaccurate, and dangerous statements on sex and gender identity. If you agree with her views, please do not read, comment on, or kudo this fanfic. I support the rights of transgender people to be called by their chosen pronouns, respected in their expression of gender, and treated fairly and equally in all things.”

Since posting I have had several positive comments from readers and a couple of emails about why I chose to make the statement, to which I responded (in part) that transphobes don’t deserve the gift of my writing. And it’s true; I could be the worst writer in fandom (I’m not, but it’s true that I’m not proud of some of my early works or some aspects of those works) and transphobes still wouldn’t deserve to read them. It is hypocrisy to express queerphobic, transphobic views and read my fanfic, which has been queer-inclusive to the best of my ability for over fifteen years now. And it felt like it was time to put that out on Tumblr as well.
