This has been a PSA.

I’m trying not to reblog posts on this blog but I feel that this is important to post here.

on a related note:

And for the people asking “Well if you don’t support it irl then why would you like it in fiction?!”
Because when it’s happening irl real people are suffering and dying and that’s horrible and I’d never want that. But when it’s fiction, when no real people are being hurt or killed, it’s interesting to explore the experience, the effects it may have, and to an extent experience the emotions involved without actually having to experience the horrible thing. You explore scary, dangerous things from a safe distance.

It’s the same reason I love disaster movies and don’t love actual disasters. I mean, if someone can’t intuit the difference  between watching a movie like 2012 and yelling “cool!” when LA slides into the ocean and being horrified at the real life effects of global warming and the idea of millions of people dying as a result, then  *I* am not the one with the problem.

The character Harry potter is 36. People who are 32 were in the exact age range to match Harry as the books were being published, they probably grew up with it and it was probably important to them if they’re still talking about their Hogwarts house. Being an adult doesn’t have to be a joyless slog of work and taxes, you’re allowed to continue enjoying your childhood interests, and playing make believe as an adult is a perfectly respectable pastime.

*banging pots and pans together*

People are allowed to enjoy things! People are allowed to critically engage in problematic content! People are allowed to be nostalgic for their childhood joys! It costs you $0 to not be a dick!

I mean, I know where a lot of our middle-aged-and-up neighbors went to college, not because I’ve talked to them (ha!) but because they have car decals and license plate frames and yard flags and T-shirts of said colleges, so “continuing to strongly identify with a thing you connected to as a kid” isn’t even limited to fandom

HARRY POTTER WAS CREATED BY AN ADULT.

TOYS ARE MADE BY ADULTS.

KID’S MOVIES AND SHOWS ARE MADE BY ADULTS.

If people stopped liking things as they got older, things wouldn’t exist for the kids, ffs.

Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten.

They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it.

The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.

It’s what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty fic…AdultFanfiction was the one I went to…but thousands of fics would never be recovered.

I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?

But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize,  snarkily say, “So, you’ve decided to join us”?

Or when someone does something they’ve had trouble doing, say, “Why can’t you do that all the time?” (Happened to me, too often.)

Or any sentence containing the word “finally”.

If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Don’t complain about how it’s not enough. Don’t bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.

Because I swear to fucking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.
